Group calls for the abatement of girl-child education
The Honorable Commissioner Ministry of Women’s Affairs and Social Development, Kaduna state Dr. Mrs. Maryamu Laka has called on the public to be gender sensitive and promote equality between the male and female gender, during the international Women’s Day Celebration at the Ministry conference hall, Kaduna state.
In her address, “Kaduna state will be focusing on Gender National Policy Strategic Framework to give the woman equal rights and job opportunity based on human merit. Women in our society suffer untold hardship for no reason other than the fact that they are women and culturally, consideration has never been given to a woman with regards to her gender and for this reason she is being treated as a second class human being.”
“Women are been abused in a numerous ways, rape cases are on the rise on daily basics, gender based violence has become a daily occurrence, and women go through so much to get what is dually hers.”
“The Gender National Policy Strategic Framework will go a long way to reduce all these abuses and grant women with the rights they deserved because women are humans and we deserves equal right and respect,” she added.
Commenting further, Dr. Mrs. Maryamu Laka said, “The male feels it is his right to take advantage of the female person. In marriage the case is not different as men forcefully take over the properties of their wife simply because she is married to him, the in-laws molest the women simply because she is married to their brother and the man is not helping situation because, he is adamant and treat the situation as normal. The woes of women are endless. ”
Traditional Leaders in collaboration Project for Integrity Initiatives have summoned parents to give Girl-Child education a chance as parent sees girl-child educations as a waste of time, saying that both male and female deserve equal right to education irrespective of the gender.
In the North some parents considers it a waste of investment sending a female child to school, stressing the fact that the female child will get married and go to her husband’s house, so they do not see the need of Girl-Child education and also considers it to be anti-Islamic because schools teach their daughters sex education which will lead them into fornication.
Speaking with the Chairman of Project for Integrity Initiatives Hon. Maitamaki Tom Maiyashi who said it is unfortunate that some people have the misconception about Islam, saying that there is no place Islam moves against girl-child education.
“Parents should help country and our economy, simply because a female child will grow up and get married does not mean she sending her to school is a waste of time, even at that no one will like to marry an uneducated woman these days. Sex education is one way is good and in other way is bad, it helps to know how prevent unwanted pregnancy, Sexual Transmitted Diseases but I strongly disagree with sex education. Females should go to school but should not be taught about sex.”
A father, Mr. Bala Mohammed who strongly disagree with the saying that ‘when one educates a woman, you educate a nation but when you educate a man, you educate an individual’ saying that women are not part of the family linage.
“I have both male and female children but I do not border much about the females because one day they will get married and that does all about them but the males will continue to bear the family name and they will keep the family linage going forever, then which nation do you educate when you educate a woman. The only education a woman need is just the basic education, above all, women education ends in kitchen.”
The delegate of Emir of Katsina, the District Head of Funtua Sambo Idris Sambo who said that gone are those days when women are not been allowed to go to school because of one reason or the other, now education is much appreciated in the north and the ratio between women and male in the school is 50-50.
To this end, Sambo called on the parents to allow their female children to go to school, as education is not complete unless the both gender are educated.
